My Music: Bluetooth Boom Barrel

If there’s one thing I hate it’s sitting on a train or bus and a bunch of douche’s coming on playing music out of their mobile phone. For me it’s not so much the fact that these people think it’s ok to do such a thing that bugs me. It is really all about the poor tinny sound quality that comes out of the tiny mobile phone speakers, crackling and clipping as the volume is pushed up too high for the small speakers to handle. I would be much happier if all public transport music playing douches were issued with one of these. The “My Music” Bluetooth portable speaker aka The Boom Barrel.

This is one of those times where you’re just going to have to take my word on the sound quality of these things. Because at first appearance it looks as if it would produce music no better than a mobile phone. But looks can be deceiving. This little cylinder delivers rich bass, and defined crystal clear trebles and vocal performance of a speaker system much larger than its size. How do they do it? I don’t know. But on closer inspection you can see there has been some thought put into the design and construction to ensure the sound is as good of quality as a device this size can give. The best example of this is the foam insulated base. A ring of foam surrounds the bottom of the speaker cancelling out vibrations and stopping the speaker rattling against any surface you put it on.Bluetooth Boom Box

You have the option to connect via Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack. I’ve found the battery to last about 6 hours using Bluetooth so it should be able to go to distance if you’re planing an afternoon at the beach with it, or even an impromptu room / dorm party in a hotel / hostel. Recharging is done via USB with the cable provided that looks similar to the 3.5mm headphone jack and also takes around 6 hours. Syncing with Bluetooth couldn’t be easier. Slide the power switch to the Bluetooth logo, than search for it on your phone / computer /tablet and your hooked up a reassuring beep is played once you’re synced up. Volume control is also done via your device so you can select music and adjust the loudness at the same time.

You can also set this to play all sound that comes out of your device, making an ideal companion of a conference call whilst on the go. Just be sure to switch off the Bluetooth before making public calls, or leaving the room to watch a type of movie that you wouldn’t want people to know you’re watching.

In the fight against tinny music from phones, the My Music Boom Barrel is your best weapon if you’re wanting something portable, great quality and easy to use. Given that it weighs about as much as a pair of sunglasses,  this is something that will be in my beach bag, travel backpack or even hand luggage in my travels from now on.
